Ultrasonography, commonly called sonography, is a diagnostic medical procedure that uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to produce dynamic visual images of organs, tissues, or blood flow inside the body. This type of procedure is often referred to as a sonogram or ultrasound scan.

This procedure is technically demanding and requires extensive operator experience to provide accurate diagnostic interpretation

These professionals travel to clinics to perform their services and can usually be available within the next clinical day. In the case of immediate emergency need, the patient can be transferred to a referral organization for this procedure.

Common indications for ultrasound evaluation of a pet include, chronic vomiting or abdominal pain, heart disease, or any illness in which diagnosis is not obtainable of physical exam, blood tests, and radiography (xrays).
